Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile issue Wireless LNP requests,
Sen. Schumer calls for cell phone users bill of rights

Feb. 25, 2003 10:49 AM EST

WASHINGTON—Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile USA Inc. have said they have sent bona fide requests for wireless local number portability and they expect to implement wireless LNP by the Nov. 24 deadline, said Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.).

Schumer announced plans on Tuesday for a cell phone user bill of rights, including the requirement to implement wireless LNP by the deadline, at the winter meeting of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners.

Schumer’s bill would require the Federal Communications Commission to collect information for and make available to consumers accurate and high-resolution coverage maps.

Additionally Schumer’s bill envisions an information box that would allow customers to compare rates and rules amongst carriers.
