To: Amy J who wrote (9202 ) 2/25/2003 2:06:12 PM From: Skeeter Bug Respond to of 306849 amy, good answer. the racism is structural. many african americans today are ancestors of slaves who were forced into being uneducated and poor through no effort of their own. undereducated folks just don't know how to be as successful as a population. yes, there are outliers. african americans with an innate sense of how to be successful. they are the exception that proves the rule. the bottom line is that undereducated folks raised poor kids in bad schools... and folks expect that population to succeed like the well off kids from households with a history of education? that just isn't rational, but it is self serving for many folks who don't want to even admit any level of "unfairness" b/c they are so focused on "getting theirs," regardless of the consequences on others. wrt to your friend, perhaps her boss was just a d*ck and asked all folks for coffee. maybe not. probably not. but if a white person is asked the same thing, they don't have all the extra baggage of wondering whether it is b/c they are viewed as subhuman. they just know their boss is a d*ck! believe me, there are plenty of them. life isn't fair. all one can do is to treat people fairly, understand context and encourage people to be successful and show them how - even if their parents were unable to. i've found out if you treat people decent, they treat you decent back. the concept that the problems in the black community is due to racial makeup and not historical context is is silly. there is a root cause to the disparity btween the races. it can easily be identified in historical context. it wasn't the fault of the african american population. ps - this isn't to rail against white folks. humanity has proved one thing - all races are greedy, the only question is who has the power to invoke their will onto others. slavery isn't amazing. what is amazing is that the powers that be in this country undid the evils of slavery. that may be a first! even so, there are lingering repercussions to the evil of slavery not equally paid by all of society.
