Only 3,500 Intel Itanium servers shipped in 2002

Itanium or Itanium 2? (or both?) If "Itanium", then no big surprise. The Merced doesn't have the legs to be a competitive chip. If "Itanium 2" (or both), then that's far more troublesome. The McKinley is a far superior chip as compared to Merced. Great performance, reasonable price. Of course, Windows 64 wasn't out last year.

If the combination of McKinley/Madison with Windows 64 doesn't start selling late this year or early next, then it's clearly time for Intel to completely rethink its 64-bit strategy.
