Well, this particular item is interesting.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Wednesday, August 19, 1998) -- The "trial balloon" is something we're used to seeing in Washington. A politician, in order to gauge how much support there is for an idea or a position, leaks word of it to an influential reporter. Once it is print, the politician can decide whether to go forward based on the reaction.

It's pretty clear that outgoing United States Soccer Federation president Alan Rothenberg launched such a trial balloon last week when "a source close to" Rothenberg leaked to The Washington Post that the national team's coaching position was about to be offered to D.C. United's Bruce Arena.

Uh ... OK.

And, then ...

Next, Alan Rothenberg officially announced what was rummored to have been coming weeks before - he and a group of investors had purchased the San Jose Clash. Rothenberg was looking forward to one day presenting the Alan I. Rothenberg trophy to himself.

Hmmmm ... there seem to be a lot of information leaks around here.

TED [century post, anyone?]
