I think VIX is worth watching, but Price is the best measure of risk. A stock that has just gone up has a good chance to come back down if it was found to be a rumor or over exuberance or short covering. Also, you can lose $100 on a $100 stock but only $1 on a $1 stock. This is simplistic (and thus full of holes that I won't even try to cover) but it is true that the Nasdaq at $5000 had far more risk in it than it does now at $1315 nomatter what the VIX reading.
