They get all huffy and start accusing people of trampling on their civil rights and yelling "McCarthyism!"

Yes. They can be mean angry ideologues but heaven help anyone who gets angry at them. Bush should be nice to France and the right should be nice to the left but the left can do anything it pleases with criticism. It's a nice formula and you can't blame them for trying. Of course, it makes them look ... unbalanced.
