4:24PM Hewlett-Packard earnings details; blames rev shortfall on weak commercial spending (HPQ) 18.18 +0.43: Co reports Q1 earnings of $0.29 per share, $0.01 better than the Multex consensus. Revs for the qtr rose 57.0% year/year to $17.88 bln, below the $18.50 bln consensus. "Our revenue shortfalls were largely confined to the U.S. market, as weak commercial spending continued." However, co says it is comfortable reaffirming the Q2 consensus est of $0.27.

4:02PM Hewlett-Packard headline number $0.29; consensus $0.28 -- light on revs $17.9 bln vs $ 18.5 bln (HPQ) 18.11 +0.36: -- Update -- Company sees Q1 EPS of $0.27 vs Multex consensus of $0.27

4:36PM Semtech beats by $0.01, guides for Q1 (SMTC) 12.27 -0.02: Reports Q4 (Jan) earnings of $0.11 per share, $0.01 better than the Multex consensus of $0.10; revenues fell 4% year/year to $44.5 mln vs the $43.7 mln consensus. Company sees Q1 sales flat to slightly up from Q4 result ($44.5 mln), Multex consensus is $45.3 mln

3:51PM Flextronics may have won EMC contract (FLEX) 8.14 +0.09: Sources tell us that CSFB believes FLEX has won a contract from EMC for their Clariion biz (away from CLS); size of the contract is said to be $100-$200 mln.

11:03AM Seagate Tech lifts in reaction to CEO comments (STX) 9.51 +0.51: A Reuters story last night reported that CEO expects to meet or exceed estimates for the qtr. Appearing at a Goldman Sachs investment conference here, CEO Steve Luczo also said he was a buyer of the company's shares and had exercised every option he could.

10:31AM Advanced Energy upgraded at Barrington (AEIS) 9.42 -0.18: Barrington in a morning note upgraded AEIS to Outperform from Mkt Perform based on valuation as well as their belief that capital spending will pick up after the Iraq war is resolved and the semi industry will lead the tech sector upturn; also, the co's aggressive mkt expansion, restructuring, and consolidation should lead to strong upside operating leverage with a resurgence in top line growth.

9:15AM NVIDIA cut to Hold from Buy at Wedbush Morgan (NVDA) 13.02: --Update-- The downgrade is based on run in price since firm upgraded NVDA two weeks ago. In addition, firm's takeaway from the Intel Developer Forum is that there is limited growth in co's core discrete graphics business, given Intel's stepped-up effort and commitment to the integrated graphics market. After attending the forum, Wedbush is convinced that Intel will play a more significant role in the graphics market in terms of moving the graphics performance of its integrated graphics chipsets up to addressing mainstream consumer mkt.

8:28AM NVIDIA increasing orders at TSM (NVDA) 13.02: Bear Stearns' Ripple Effect says that Taiwan's Commercial Times reported this morning that NVDA has aggressively increased its wafer orders at Taiwan Semi (TSM); NVDA's CEO also told the paper he expects sequential growth in notebook graphics chips in every quarter of 2003, and sees significant improvement in Xbox chips in the second half versus the first half of 2003.
