SEOUL (AP)--North Korea urged its military and people to be ready for war,
the South Korean news agency Yonhap reported, quoting a statement from the

DJ N Korea/Be Ready -3: `Mobilize All Resources'

25 Feb 18:53

"This requires our military and people to mobilize all our resources to be
fully ready for any contingencies," Yonhap quoted the North Korean statement as
saying.

The North Korean ministry didn't elaborate.

The statement came hours after South Korea's new president, Roh Moo-hyun, was
sworn in Tuesday.

The South Korean leader called on North Korea to give up its nuclear
ambitions in return for help from the international community to rebuild its
moribund economy.

DJ N Korea/Be Ready -4: Follows Missile Test Monday

25 Feb 18:59

North Korea is in the midst of its annual winter training military exercise.

North Korea on Monday fired a short-range, anti-ship missile into the Sea of
Japan, the body of water between the Korean peninsula andJapan, raising
tensions in the region already roiled by the nuclear standoff.

The missile firing was an act many believe was designed to upstage the
inauguration of South Korea's new president.

During the 1993-94 nuclear crisis in the peninsula, North Korea put its 1.1
million-member military, the world's fifth largest, on war footing and moved
much of its military into underground tunnels.
