Eva

I haven't been following your ordeal that closely, but have read a few of the suggestions that others have offered. Before I would have the hardrive changed or other expensive replacements done, I would try a few more free tests. The suggestion about the heat build up in the machine was a good idea , but I have generally found that when heat is a problem, that one usually sufferes from a blue screen or shutdown. I would suggest if you haven't already tried the tests that are free at PCPitstop, that you run them. Just go to the following link and run the full test option.
pcpitstop.com
After you see those results ,I would suggest that you also install Langa.com's CleanAll software. It will do a excellent job of cleaning up the hardrive and especially removing all of the temporary internet folders uneeded files , yet leaving needed cookies and passwords for your different site log ins. Heres the link for this site.http://www.langa.com/cleanup_bat.htm

If after those actions the problem still isn't resolved, I would suggest doing a clean install of Windows ME since you have it already , before I would be replacing the hardrive. I'm not a fan of Windows ME , but would use it since you already have it. Hardrives are reasonably cheap now, so it's not a major expense , but your problem doesn't really seem to point toward a hardware problem. Since you have already run anti virus software , that shouldn't be a issue , so the only other test I might do first, would be a ram burn . I thought that maybe the tech was going to find a defective ram stick, but that doesn't seem the be the problem from their findings. These are just a few suggestions that I would try first , and maybe others have already suggested them and I just happened to miss their postings.

Regards

I know you've been down the virus route already but it would seem to me that it HAS to be software/program/os related

you're tough to stick with it. I'm sure I would have smashed the POS by now. Cordless phones and keyboards are fun too<g>
