Wow! Some marketers alive and kicking. Globalstar couldn't figure out in 1999 that they should have adopted such a strategy.

If India continues with this sort of approach, they are going to do very well very quickly. Maybe rich people really have risen to their level of incompetence just as managers rise to their level of incompetence. Hence, Sprint and others fail to market CDMA with a view to maximizing revenue, profit and market share [which pretty much go together for things like mobile phone service].

Go Reliance! Great stuff. Maybe QUALCOMM could do something similar with Globalstar. All it would take is some imagination, and not very much at that, since India is showing the way.

Regarding Unicom handset subsidies.

This article said Unicom intended on stopping handset subsidies by end of March. At which time, 1X is expected to come on the market and be the main attraction.

At the bottom of the article (translated):

One of the reasons why Unicom is so confident with cdma 1x is the rapid development of "color e". According to an Unicom source, as of Feb 8, Guangton Unicom has exceeded 30,000 "color e" subs. In addition, "color e" is adding over 1k subscriber per day (just Guangton Unicom, area size unknown). When the faster data service of 1x platform is completed, "color e" growth could be even more optimistic.......

Slides for Thornley and Keitel Presentations on QCOM site

Thornley's slides for his Goldman Sachs presentation on the 25th are mostly the ones used at the annual meeting. There is one point that I don't recall seeing before. The Global 3G Evolution slide now has "(1xEV-DV)" above "Rel. C - 2.4M" in the calendar column for "2005..." as an evolution of 1x.

Keitel's ML presentation has an interesting Slide 5 that compares the specs of an Intel 80486 in 1992 with a Sony 1x phone in 2001.

At the AM a question asked about the slide Qualcomm used to always include about the relative cost of a megabyte of data on the various systems (GPRS was 42 cents; DO was 2.3 cents etc.). Dr. Jacobs seemed to suggest that Qualcomm will provide that information again. Keitel's slide 14 now covers this but expresses the issue in relative terms of "Network Cost per Mbyte (15% traffic volumes at busy hour)" where DO is the base of 1. GPRS is 21x more expensive than DO on the assumption that GPRS achieves a max 20 kbps per time slot. WCDMA is 3.5x and CDMA2000 1X is 3x times the cost of DO. qualcomm.com
