I watched Powell's description of what we would learn when we heard the second to last bin Laden tape, and he did say that it would reveal a connection between Al Qaeda and Iraq, and based on my understanding of the tape, I think he overstated the case.

It may be that he had not heard or read a translation and was basing it on what others had told him.

Bin Laden's pronouncements were consistent with the way you've analyzed his motives in the past, that he believes that there is a connection between Muslims everywhere, that hurting one Muslim is hurting all Muslims, and that they should be united in a common Muslim cause against anybody who would hurt them or thwart their goals.

He doesn't care about Saddam, but he does care about the Muslim people of Iraq.

Not to belabor this desultory exchange any longer, or to cause you to lose any more sleep, but you originally wrote:

Furthermore, they are capable of making common cause.

To which I eventually responded:

Maybe it's all part of showing "they can make common cause". I don't think Fred Wertheimer will be too happy to hear that.

You might want to look up Fred Wertheimer and his connection to "common cause". A lame enough joke, I guess maybe I should have told you to send it to FredWertheimer@commoncause.org in official FADG subtle/unsubtle cultural cross reference fashion. As to the rest of you "enemies" synthesis, that's not particularly subtle either, though it's certainly a well trod path and good for rabble rousing purposes. I guess you could use it to bring together all 4 of Hoffman's types from #reply-18625288 , but I figure those guys get along plenty well without your help.
