Friedman "made his bones" as a reporter for the New York Times in Lebanon. He explains the mess Israel got into when they invaded Lebanon in '82 in his first major book. If you want to get a better understanding of the Israeli/Pal situation, read his book, "From Beirut to Jerusalem." We have it on the "required reading list" here.
