Speaking to mediapersons in Imphal today, Krishna Kumar informed that WLL services will be launched at eight stations, at Imphal, Thoubal, Kakching, Chandel, Moreh, Bishnupur, Ukhrul and Churachandpur. Initially, 4000 lines will be made available, with each station having 500 lines each, though more lines will be made available progressively according to the public demand. For the time being, the service will be concentrated in the rural areas, Krishna Kumar stated. With regard to launching of full-fledged mobile (cellular) telephony services in the state, he said the required material and equipment were being finalized. Expressing confidence that the service can be launched by August, he said 7300 lines will initially be provided, which can be increased to 8,500. While informing that there were currently 40,000 telephone connections in the state, he disclosed that outstanding dues for the state amounted to Rs. 38 crores, including an amount of Rs. 3 crores owed by the state government. Urging defaulting consumers to pay up, he pointed out that expansion and development of telecom services was suffering. While expressing relief over the safe release of BSNL deputy general manager, J Lunkim, Krishna Kumar expressed gratitude to the various organisations who worked for his release. He added that he has met with the DGP, Manipur, S Bimalchandra, and has been assured of provision of security for telecom establishments in the state. Meanwhile, members of the BSNL employees action committee which was formed in connection with the kidnapping episode, have appealed to all concerned not to create any disturbance to telecom personnel who are going about their duty.
