the French hate us now too.

I wouldn't call it "hate". It is more like annoyance with Americans' ignorant bumbling in world politics, resentment of their warmongering & and recently, the insults towards them just because they dared disagree.

And of course they laugh at Americans' renaming the "french fries". (I must admit I laughed at that, too :-)

There is a program on Canal + called Les Guignols de l'Info where lifesize puppets of current news persona appear on a news show to talk about the news of the day. There was an ad in that show the other day:

Sentimental music... Camera approaches a house in an American suburb, with the American flag waving in the wind. A fat little kid with a bag on his bag says bye to his mom and goes out the door. He huffs and puffs for a few steps, struggles to walk, but can't really manage, and finally stumbles at the corner, barely out of the garden. Watching this, his mom rushes out, pushes him into this HUGE vehicle that looks more like a truck or a small mountain cottage than a car, and drives off.

Next, you see them in a McDonalds, where the kid is happily stuffing his face with a Big Mac. Camera draws away, and there is the voiceover that says, "Every day, thousands of obese American kids cannot walk to school or even to a McDonalds and Pizza Hut and need oil for transportation in their huge cars. The war on Iraq is Just. Because the smile of an obese American kid has no price."

Sorry about that. But that is the French view of the situation - America is acting like an oil-junkie after its next fix, and would rather go invading Iraq than moderate its consumption. Or something.
