Having friends to stay with is always good for the budget. I used to have a friend in Ossining, in Westchester county, New York, who for quite awhile had room for me and my girlfriend (later wife). This was during and right after college. We would drive to the Bronx, park by his grandmother's house, and take a subway (really, an elevated at that point) to Times Square. The trip was about an hour, and we would stay all day. Unfortunately, he moved to West Palm Beach, Florida, which I am less interested in. I have other friends in New York, but no one I would feel right imposing upon.
