I'm not going to defend the Iranian's actions in 1979. They were barbaric and unjustified. I'm just trying to understand the historical context of the situation and why they might feel so much anger at the U.S. to do such a horrendous thing. The Shah's secret police, SAVAK (trained by the CIA), treated the Iranian people horribly and they never forgot who installed and supported the Shah and SAVAK.

I do believe that the Reagan campaign had a deal with the Iranians to keep our hostages in captivity until after Reagan was inagurated in order to show the Republican's foreign policy strength. I actually saw the President of Iran on CNN about ten years ago flatly stating that his government had made a deal with the Reagan campaign to keep the hostages in captivity. And, I've read all sorts of other testimony by prominent Iranians to that effect. To each his own as they say. But, I believe there was a deal.
