You make a good point, Kenya.

State education certainly seems to have worked better in the past, that's for sure.

In fact, there seems to be a correlation between the amount of money spent and the quality of that education ('lower,' generally, leading to 'better'); or, alternately, the relationship may have to do with that arising between lower taxes and, consequently, more money in Mom & Dad's pockets, giving them more time to spend with the kids, more means to participate in all those informal sources of learning (books, trips etc.), all of which compensate for the state's clumsy shortcomings.
