Nigel,

I assume that this means that the batter swung and hit a slow roller to the shortstop, who probably threw wildly to first base allowing the runner(batter) to go all the way to third base. I have not read Summerland so if this is not in the right context forgive me.

bunt (excluding "drag" bunt)..... a batter (the guy/gal with the stick) squares around and faces the pitcher, choking up on the bat (moving his hands up slightly toward the sweet spot, or toward the meat of the stick). The batter places the bat (stick) in the path of the ball, but attempts to absorb the momentum of the ball and thus dump the ball someplace in the vicinity of home plate (the white thing, bordered by black, that delineates the strike zone).

drag bunt..... the batter wears a dress if male.

swinging bunt..... the dress comes off, frequently and sometimes without discretion. Alternative meaning is that the batter (guy/gal with stick) fakes absorbing the momentum of the ball and instead swings at the ball from the normal bunting stance, attempting to surprise the onrushing defenders with a batted ball where they ain't.

strike zone..... generally an area with disgruntled members of a union.

bobble...... a fielder (one of the guys with the leather thingies on their hands) doesn't handle the ball cleanly, leaving a bit of dirt on it.

shortstop.... almost inevitably a fielder with the glove on his left hand, found on the left side of the playing field at an intermediate depth, often standing on dirt. Often rushes toward one of the padded items lying in dirt, as a bunt is placed.

triple...... the batter gets to run and touch three of the padded things, counter clockwise, standing on or in the vicinity of the third when finished.

Gift triple..... a large drink, purchased by a leacher for an attractive woman.

J.D. is correct. No way you get a gift triple off a a bobble unless there's a wild throw by the shortstop to a player guarding one of the padded things lying in the dirt.

Alternatively, if the bunt is a "squeeze" bunt, the shortstop might have made a wild throw to the black-bordered delimiting thing.
