Nah, spent much of yesterday and this morning in local politics. The similarities with academic politics are just phenomenal. I'm now using my experience in that to offer suggestions for local politics. Very strange.

You've heard the comment, no doubt, that academic politics is so vicious because it's about so little; same can be said for local politics, even though it's actually about a good bit more such as local taxes, good schools, paved streets, firefighters, police, etc. The politics, apparently, and I'm still very much the learner, is as bad as academic stuff but not about these issues. Much more personal. The other stuff, the important stuff, seems to get done fairly well.
