Harris Corporation Receives NSA Approval to Market SecNet 11 Secure Wireless Technology to Select U.S. Allies
- BusinessWire

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Feb 26, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Harris Corporation today announced that it has received approval from the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) to sell the Harris SecNet 11(TM) Secure Wireless Local Area Network (SWLAN) product to the governments of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. SecNet 11, certified by the NSA's Commercial COMSEC Endorsement Program (CCEP), is a revolutionary new product that enables military and government users to communicate multimedia information - including data, voice and video - through a Type 1, secure wireless network at an unprecedented 11 Megabits-per-second (Mbps). The announcement was made during the Association of the U.S. Army (AUSA) Winter Symposium and Exhibition (Harris Booth #303), held February 26-28, at the Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

"We are very pleased that the NSA has granted this authorization," said Roger Alexander, SecNet 11 product manager for Harris Corporation. "It opens new doors to Harris as we expand the market for this first-of-its-kind wireless product, and ensures that our allies would have the same, force-multiplying communications technology that our U.S. military forces enjoy."

In addition to the allied sales authorization received from the NSA, Harris announced last month that it had signed an agreement with Northrop Grumman Information Technology to resell Harris' SecNet 11 products to Northrop Grumman's North American, COMSEC-approved customer base.

SecNet 11 offers the benefit of untethered, communications-on-the-move for a broad range of applications, including intelligence distribution, en-route mission planning and rehearsal, video conferencing, dispersed wireless Tactical Operations Centers (TOCs), and connectivity for mobile forces to the Global Information Grid. It completely eliminates the wires and bulky encryption devices traditionally required for communicating secret-level data.

SecNet 11's Type 1 encryption capability secures the entire IEEE 802.11b packet, which provides secure communication of data and network header information (COMSEC and NETSEC) for all network layers. The system also features fast set-up, lightweight design, and low power consumption.

Harris GCSD, one of five divisions within Harris Corporation, conducts advanced research studies, develops prototypes, and produces and supports state-of-the-art, assured communications and information systems that solve the mission-critical communications challenges of its military and government customers, as well as provides the technology base for the company's diverse commercial businesses. Harris Corporation, which also provides tactical radio, microwave, broadcast, and network support products and systems, has sales and services facilities in more than 90 countries. Harris Corporation Demonstrates Vehicle-Mounted, Multiband Satellite Communication System at U.S. Army Exhibition

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FT. LAUDERDALE, Florida, February 26, 2003 – Attendees at the Association of the U.S. Army (AUSA) Winter Symposium and Exhibition are being given a glimpse into the future of military communications, courtesy of Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS). The company, which is a leading supplier of multiband satellite communications (SATCOM) terminals to the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), is demonstrating its HUMVEE-mounted, Quad-Band, multi-channel SATCOM terminal solution at the AUSA exhibition, held February 26-28, 2003, in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

“We are extremely pleased to be able to demonstrate this next-generation, mobile military satellite communications system,” said Bob Henry, president, Harris Government Communications Systems Division (GCSD). “The theme of this AUSA symposium is ‘Accelerating Change Through a Culture of Innovation and Collaboration,’ and we believe that this new satellite terminal system solution from Harris encompasses both of these ideals. It offers a leading-edge technology solution that is the result of Harris’ 40 years of experience working with the DoD in developing SATCOM terminals.”

The prototype system, proposed as a next-generation SATCOM solution for the U.S. Army, provides military X- and Ka-band, and commercial C- and Ku-band capabilities for satellite-based, voice, video, and data communications. The terminal also offers significantly greater reliability, as well as several times the communications capacity and throughput of older generation terminals, providing military commanders with highly mobile, HMMWV-mounted communications connectivity within the battlefield and reach-back to headquarters operations.

This new generation of Quad-Band satellite communications terminal offers full redundancy, the ability to keep up with the pace of operations with minimum set-up and tear-down times, and the means to meet challenges posed by the harshest of environmental conditions. The terminal, built with the warfighter in mind, was specifically designed to reduce maintenance time and costs, and significantly reduce life-cycle costs.

Harris GCSD is a key supplier of tactical and strategic satellite communications terminals for all branches of the military. Its solutions cover the range of SATCOM mediums with fixed, mobile and afloat terminals that offer a wide array of capabilities to support all military and government requirements.

WHAT: As part of continuing "War on Terror and Homeland Defense"
coverage, WTTG FOX 5 (Washington DC FOX affiliate) plans to air a
segment related to emergency preparedness and response.
Xybernaut(R) (NASDAQ:XYBR - News) has been invited to participate in the
segment and to demonstrate the Mobile Assistant(R) V (MA(R) V)
wearable computer first responder solution.
The wearable computing solution that will be demonstrated is an MA
V configured as a Critical Incident Response Toolkit (CIRT). The CIRT
platform was formally announced last week (February 20, 2003) jointly
by Xybernaut, the DOJ National Institute of Justice (NIJ) and the
South Carolina Research Authority (SCRA).
During the segment, Xybernaut will demonstrate the capabilities of
the CIRT solutions as a technology platform that assists emergency
"first responders" such as police officers, firefighters, HAZMAT
experts or other emergency personnel.
As indicated in the February 20 announcement, the objective of the
joint program is to continue to develop, deploy and evaluate solutions
that assist in rapid response to acts of terrorism, violence, natural
disasters and/or other emergency situations.
The system enhances rapid response capabilities by providing
immediate access to critical operational information necessary to
initiate tactical intervention, rescue and/or recovery operations.

WHEN: The segment is scheduled to air either Thursday, February
27, 2003 or Friday, February 28, 2003 during either the 7:00am or
8:00am ET FOX Morning News program.

Key elements related to the CIRT program include:

Xybernaut is the primary integrator of the joint DOJ-NIJ/SCRA CIRT solutions -- hardware, software and additional services
The CIRT activities involve various government entities/customers at federal/state/local levels -- this cross-jurisdictional element is an important aspect of how homeland security procurements are expected to be awarded
The CIRT contract award is valued at more than $700K for Xybernaut
The CIRT program leverages Xybernaut experience working with commercial, government, military and law enforcement communities for more than a decade
The CIRT concept/solution is being evaluated by the National Institute of Justice for consideration as a model for first responder technology throughout the U.S.
Xybernaut CIRT solutions are easily replicable and scalable to other jurisdictions -- international or federal/state/local within the U.S.
Xybernaut has been working with CIRT partners for more than 6 months -- the current deployment of Xybernaut MA V wearable computers is a critical phase in the program
The CIRT program is a "customer deployment" that is exemplary of Xybernaut efforts and success in the homeland security/first responder communities
The CIRT effort includes a Team Xybernaut partner -- this is an example of how Xybernaut works with partners on high quality business opportunities
