That's not that bad. My wife has asthma; she takes several inhalants that last 1-2 per prescription and cost that each. I take Lipitor; it runs about $300 a month actual cost.

I can only speak from experience but the cost of drug insurance for my folks was way too high and didn't cover enough. I did an analysis at the time that I was looking after my folks and decided not to get the insurance and just payed the $500 a month.

I pay my own insurance - don't qualify for medicare yet - and have also opted out of the drug insurance because of the cost. Therefore, I pay the full boat if I ever need any drugs - which fortunately (knock on wood) I don't have a need for.

I have a friend who was recently "retired" from a large corporation and went to get a script filled only to find out that the Cobra she had didn't cover drugs - she was stunned when they asked for $150 for a month's supply. She had a $10 co-pay on drugs while she was working.

To say that it's a rather large burden is an understatement - and I think that's true for most people without corporate insurance and seniors who only have Medicare and no drug coverage.
