China To Let US Question Witnesses In Lucent Case - FT

SINGAPORE -(Dow Jones)- U.S. prosecutors are preparing to visit Beijing next month to interview 12 potential witnesses in the case of three Chinese citizens charged with stealing trade secrets from Lucent Technologies , the Financial Times reports.

Scott Christie, the assistant U.S. attorney prosecuting the case in New Jersey, said 11 of the 12 Chinese slated to be questioned are employees of Datang, the company alleged to have received the stolen trade secrets.

However, a lawyer for Datang, a telecommunications equipment maker under the control of China's Ministry of Information Industry, says the company hadn't received any notice about the visit.

The planned hearings mark the first time Beijing has agreed to let U.S. law enforcement authorities interview witnesses, FT says. Some observers say the move is designed to demonstrate China's seriousness about clamping down on industrial espionage.

The two-year-old case centers on two former Lucent scientists accused of conspiring to steal computer technology with the intention of marketing it in China. A third defendant is accused of helping set up a company through which stolen trade secrets were passed to Datang.
