We have wished our Chinese friends the same and our American friends the same on Thanksgiving and it is with the same heart that I wish all of you a happy new year. I would remind everyone that universal records show that western man's history has been many times bloodier than in the muslim culture and that during the same centuries muslim tolerance of other religions has been many times as generous as western man's. I would also remind us that while the monks in the middle ages copied and re-copied the ancient greek texts and kept them sacred - they lost their meaning in many areas of europe. It was the period of calm in southern Spain where the moors (muslim) and the spanish (catholic) lived in harmony for some time - that the muslim scholars helped the western scholars actually understand the texts the meanings of which the muslims had never lost. It was muslims that also gave us the concept of the zero which previously had not been an element of western thinking in mathematics but is now very useful (as in DMX is going to zero). Also, everyone may not be aware that the muslims, jews, and catholics plus their offshoots (protestants, anglicans, etc) all believe in exactly the same old testament. We all use the same bible. It is only the new testament (christ) which differs from the koran (mohammed) which differs from the post-talmud (no one yet). Happy New Year to a great people. I have no comment on present day politics which my studies show rarely stand up to scrutiny after some history except to say that I have always squirmed not only at the actions of the Germans; but also the great legacy of the Spanish and Portugeuse in central and south america, and the French in Africa, and the British in Africa, Central America, Australia, etc (I was still in the "A"'s). May God be merciful to all of us.
