The expectation that Iraq can be turned into a democracy is either an example of hubris, or the Bush administration knows something about Iraq that's not public (Iraq is very secular, like Turkey) or there's a cynical "Plan B" to install some friendly group and pretend to be democratic.

I would bet Rumsfield would have a Plan B and C ready.

Interesting that current plans include leaving most of the Iraqi government in place, after changing the top 2-3 layers.

There could be some intermediate path that keeps civil order and puts a multi- party democracy on top of that.

Wolfowitz is the author and promoter of the pre-emptive strike doctrine. Perle is sort of a loose cannon and attack dog.

The U.S. used to have people like Archie Roosevelt (Teddy's son ) who knew the Arab world.

LOL, yea.... that's a good one. I think more cultural information could be gleaned from the Peace Corps than the CIA. Those guys really have a terrible record of opening their eyes to anything but a gun in the face. NFG
