Briefly put, I agree with most of the Mearshimear and Walts article which argues containment can work, did work

I suppose it does "work" insofar as it it works like the "devastation of war" except it takes longer - it will kill as many if not more people. Does this make it better?

It is also unsure. Hussein may manage to get the nukes together, anyway. He's managing to buy and develop stuff despite containment.

The regime is sitting on an ocean of oil. It's not going to go broke like the Soviets. The regime is not like the last of the Soviet rulers who no longer had heart for killing any more of their subjects, or even foreigners.

It's a practically, intellectually and ethically unsound policy.
