OT, jpg compression

Ron,

as you may know, jpg is a lossy compression scheme, with the degree of loss proportional to the degree of compression and inversely proportional to image quality. When a PC is connected to Vision, all images transferred to the PC through the network are re-compressed to be smaller jpg files on-the-fly, resulting in a noticeable degradation in the quality of all images when web-surfing, for instance. I am guessing that this image down-sampling may have been responsible for what appears to be exaggerated speeds as "measured" by CNET, since the file ultimately transferred would be actually smaller than the one CNET anticipates. Dslreports, on the other hand, measures download/upload speeds by transfering an mp3 file, which is not modified by Sprint's transparent proxy server.
