The American character has been so since at least the time of De Tocqueville's visit in the 1830's. As a culture, we are rather practical and business oriented, although there are plenty of scholars and poets. Certainly it would be considered crass to suggest that someone accompany you to a bar without offering to pick up the check; or to boast of the price of your car or home; or to ask someone what his income was; or to ask the price of a gift. Nevertheless, I trust you when you say that we are comparatively more open about financial matters, and less prone to feel obliged to put up a front.

I am curious about what you would consider "winter", though. Americans do not commonly wear shorts (outside of Florida, California, or Hawaii) past October, and even then, only due to "Indian Summer". The earliest that shorts come out is around the beginning of spring, in mid- March, unless it is unseasonably warm at the end of February, and April is more common.......
