I was working on the definition of bigot. What is bigotry?

Is opposing a person because of their personal political views bigotry? I say no -- that a restaurant that says "if you oppose the war in Iraq we won't serve you" would not be bigotry, but that bigotry has to depend on some immutable characteristic.

If we're agreed there, then there is the question whether a person can be held accountable for the political views of their democratically elected government.

Let's be clear -- the guy is not against Frenchmen because they're Frenchmen, but because their government has taken a given political position. If France turned around and said "we're for war against Iraq and we love the USA," the guy would presumably rescind his no-French rule.

So, is he entitled to assign to people responsibility for decisions their government is making? And if he does, is that bigotry?

That's where I was going with this.
