But what you're calling for is an improvement to the system... there should be more of an educational component to HeadStart than there is now.

No, I'm calling for it to be cut. It doesn't work, and we can't afford it, so nuke it and go back to the drawing board. I would much rather see funds put into decreasing class size, putting music back in etc. Hell, if you want to have a daycare for lower classes like Ted indicated, just don't try and disguise it as an education program.

If there is one woman that wants to work and can't afford to because she has kids, there are probably a bunch, and in close proximity too. Get 7 of them together and hand off the kids each day. If they really wanted to, they could find a way.

Since when? I had 44 kids in my kindergarten, and every single one of them could read before the first grade, most thanks to kindergarten.

That didn't come out right. I wasn't knocking kindergarten, just pointing out that it was tacked on to school in a similar fashion. Maybe it works though...that would set it apart from headstart.

My main issue though is the Gov doesn't want to cut headstart, or fix headstart. He wants an entirely new program for 4 year olds.
