Exactly.

America is stronger because we all can disagree. if we all agreed, America would be weaker. The students who died at Kent State were patriots, willing to die for their country. Which is not to say that all protesters were patriots during Viet Nam, but neither were all soldiers IMO.

What we need to guard against is leaders who would use hate and patriotism to further their own hunger for power. Joe McCarthy is a good American example. Certainly Stalin, Hitler, Miloszevic are good international examples.

One more rant. So many are so critical of the French, yet what they are criticzing is the incredible strength of French patriotism. The French are so patriotic that they actually still believe they are a world power. We may disagree with their stance, but why not, at least, respect their patriotism.
