how many countries do we have to pay off to garner their support? how many do we have to threaten? how many do we have to extort?

<< I don't know the exact count myself, but I do know that most eastern European countries as well as Spain and, I think, Italy support the US position. >>

correct you are, Bob.
France and Germany both have enormous financial interests in keeping Saddam in power. He's a great customer of their weapons systems, and he sell them cheap oil that they can then turn aorund and put $3 US tax per gallon on at the pumps in France and Germany.

The countries of europe that do not have enormous financial interests in keeping Saddam in power are squarely behind the US.
