<<... but can anyone see additional drawbacks? >>

hi thames... i've had two dogs for years (although one of them is now on "loan")... having two is really good for them and takes some of the pressure off the humans to entertain them...

the only drawbacks as i could tell is that there's double the poop and sometimes their excitement in chasing things like squirrels feeds off eachother... they look at one another and then take off!

but the training is easier - they seem to like to compete to see who is the better dog.

and, of course, as puppies they can both drive you nuts - double the insanity sometimes ;)

Sounds like a good plan, Goldens and Labs are natural pals...all you need is a lake or stream, and they'll be in heaven. As pups, be prepared for them to tear up the yard for a year or so..

Go for it.

james-

we've had as many as three dogs at
a time (all little mind you) but
they just love the company of another
dog.

now charlie tries to get the cats to
follow him - they just stare at him.

go ahead - get two.

rose

<<...My fiancée and I want to get a dog in summer. Can't decide on a Golden Retriever (her) or a black Labrador (me); now a friend [who has 3 dogs + other pats] has suggested we get two dogs, so they can keep each other company especially if we're both out...>>

TS: I grew up with golden retrievers and they are fantastic pets...Yet, we had some close family friends with black labs and they have a lot to offer as pets too (i think some of the labs can be a little wilder and more high strung -- of course, i'm biased <G>).

Let us know when you get your new pet(s).

btw, i have fond memories of when i was young and would spend hours on the beach and swim with my last golden (named buffy)...she loved to fetch tennis balls, frisbees, driftwood, etc...she loved the water SO MUCH that she used to follow me out when i went windsurfing...;-)
