The CA Vineyards do turn out very quality products. The Australians are also. I have quite a lot of the Australian Shirazs that I serve with lamb dishes and they are really quite a value.

Many of the French wines are not what they are cracked up to be. But there are some great values there too. Say what you will, I detect a very keen difference between the CA Chardonnay's and the French Montrachets. The latter have a steely almost metallic finish that you just do not get from the CA wines. I'm willing to pay for it, though I buy some of the CA wines too.

I'm sure there are people here with more expertise than I (like Lizzie), but my general understanding is that decent taste has become less expensive in the wine industry in the past 20 years. Cal vineyards like Robert Mondavi and Woodbridge are producing product for $12 that rival French $40 wines.

Of course, I'm just a beer man, so don't take my word as gospel. -gg-

From time to time I like a 4 oz glass of wine for dinner. Carlo Rossi makes a Sangria close to what I used to make years ago. I get it on sale for $7.99 a bottle, gallon bottle. Screw top. Lasts for a month.
