Wayne, 100-1 that U.S. troops go into Iraq. Only 5-1 that they do it in a war. The reasons for going in/going to war, in order:

1. As a warning to third world countries that the only super power is going to exercise its super power when and where it pleases.

2. To prevent a shift to other currencies/commodities and away from the dollar as a vehicle of international trade.

3. To protect our sources of oil, with Saudi's royal family looking shakier every day.

4. To get rid of a very nasty dictator who will not kowtow to the USA. Really nasty dictators who do kowtow will be instructed by the lesson.

5. Because Rumsfeld and Cheney consider not finishing the job in Iraq a stain on the first Bush Administration.

6. To use war as a cover for a crumbling economy. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

7. To arouse patriotism, which any war does. At first.

8. To shift eyeballs away from the Palestinian problem in Israel. My own guess is that this one will backfire. Many Americans could care less right now. But let American troops be stationed in the Middle East and we become more involved.

9. To get rid of some nasty weapons in the hands of a dingbat. Most of which we sold to him, but that is totally a moot point, and I'm not being sarcastic. Focusing on the fact that we once had a failed policy has little to do with what we do now. Heck, we once supported the Taliban.

10. To build huge navy bases in a new location. This is just political and the fact that Haliburton will benefit greatly is a dividend, not the reason.

11. The country needs a punching bag after 9/11. Afghanistan was not a strong enough competitor to relieve the "I'm gonna get in my pickup and kick somebody's ass" feeling many have after that tragedy.

12.* This one I hope is not true: to reduce civil liberties in the USA. I'm not talking about racial civil rights, but The Bill of Rights.

One I forgot. To test our new weapons in a live setting.
