Media and the military: Strange bedfellows

The Pentagon says it will give the media what the media has been demanding - access to the front lines in any war with Iraq......... news organizations around the country got word from the Pentagon that they had more than 500 slots for "embedding" journalists with troops........ The decision represents an about-face from Desert Storm. In that campaign, the armed forces pooled a few reporters to represent all. The rest - the vast majority - got nowhere near the action....... Before long, they got it. The Pentagon said it would embed reporters, if they agreed to ground rules designed to safeguard military secrets. The Pentagon said the rules "are in no way intended to prevent release of derogatory, embarrassing, negative, or uncomplimentary information."

....... His reaction? He's impressed by the Pentagon's promise of media access and long list of what will be "releasable." It appears to be a "big leap forward" from the military's shutting off (or jerking around) reporters in the country's most recent armed conflicts......Many of the new ground rules Schanberg finds sensible or benign....
