Express New Service
New Delhi, February 27: POST-paid users of MTNL’s Dolphin cellular service will be a happy lot from March 1, when incoming will become free for them. Joining the league of other cellular and WLL operators who have drastically slashed airtime and rental charges, MTNL announced attractive packages for their customers.

Calls originating from landlines, WLL phones as well as other cellular networks will be free for Dolphin users. Of the 1.4 lakh Dolphin users, about 1.3 lakh are post-paid customers and will benefit immediately from this scheme. Those using pre-paid cards will be part of this group from April 1.

Announcing this and other facilities that MTNL is planning for its customers, CMD Narindra Sharma said that incoming calls will be free for the post-paid Dolphin users without any extra charges, irrespective of the plan they were on. Rentals on plans C and D have also been reduced from Rs 700 and 1,900 to Rs 650 and 1,200 respectively.

‘‘MTNL has also started MTNL Mail from February 24 through which landline subscribers can send and receive email over the phone or on their fax numbers. The landline user will be alerted about the text email. The facility will also be available for Dolphin users, who will get an alert on their mobile phones in the form of an SMS when an email is received,’’ said Sharma.

The service would be free for the first two months after which a nominal charge of Rs 9 would be levied on a monthly basis. Sending or receiving a message would cost 20 paise each.

The text of the email will be converted into speech and texts of any length prepared in Microsoft Word or HTML format would be read out to the receiver. The access code for this service is 1255. For the address, the sender will have to key in: 11telephonenumber@mtnlmail.com.

Landline users can also send SMS to mobile phones. The service will cost 50 paise per message.

Subscribers can also get their telephone bill alerts on email. Earlier, they would be sent by post. The bill can be download from the Net. The customer will also be intimated about bill payments two-three days before the due date, Sharma informed. Subscribers have to get themselves registered and add their telephone number for which the bill alert and reminder is needed. For more information, check the website: bol.net.in.

In keeping with the popularity of the Internet, MTNL is starting a pilot project offering Internet services to PSTN users. Phone and Internet facility would be available simultaneously on the same number. There would be no extra call charges for Internet access. The line would always be connected to the Net. The pilot project will start in Connaught Place and will be available on speeds ranging from 64-256 kbps along with voice telephone service.
