It is NOT dumb to increase one's chance for cancer in exchange for the pleasures gained by indulgence. It is simply a choice that is not your's (or mine for that matter). Nowhere is it written that a long healthy life is the thing that we must all strive for at all costs. There are some among us who would value a short exciting life over a long boring one. They take risks. They are aware of the risks and do so for the perceived benefits. Are they dumb because you would not do so? "Clearly"? Your concept of clarity is at best, muddy. -ggg I understand what it is to lead a life that is exciting, intense and to the limit... (regardless of how short it could be). However, I do not see how taking care of a basic good diet would interfere with leading the life you are referring to. Does brushing your teeth interfere with such a life? I doubt it. Brushing (and flossing) one's teeth is a healthy habit; that is all. A mere fact. Eating unhealthy food... particularly when you know that it is bad for you... tells me that either you are simply lazy, (given the "conveninence" junk food provides), or don't care about it. The same applies to cigarettes or any other drug for that matter... These two items (not eating junk food/ consuming tobacco) are equivalent to brushing your teeth (or not) it is a matter of making a health conscious choice. Nothing more. Given the alternatives and ignoring the consequences, junk food eating and smoking are dumb choices. This has nothing to do with "elitism” It is dumb because in spite of having alternatives to do something better for yourself; you choose not to do it. Such decision has nothing to do with how exciting a life you will lead...or not. If you like adventures and living at the absolute limit.... (Like for example driving at 9/10ths. and even occasionally at 10/10ths....) or whatever is it that you are thinking as exciting and NOT boring...It is not an excuse to justify eating junk food or smoke tobacco.... I fail to understand why would you NOT want take care of precious resources by eating junk or smoking. Regardless of your priorities... I simply do not see the connection or in which fashion paying attention to a better diet would interfere with an exciting life? If anything, a better diet would enhance such life... Same goes for tobacco... I mean in which way, smelling like an ashtray helps you lead the life of excitement you are alluding to? You may enjoy it, both eating junk food and tobacco... and that is fine... but still. It is a dumb choice given the alternatives and what is known about them (i.e. risk/reward relationship). The problem here is that you take it as a given that everyone shares your value system. Twinkies may shorten your life span but some think they taste good. It's a trade off that some choose to take. My value system has nothing to do with how arteries get clogged up or lungs get cancer. In fact I may be either a saint or a criminal, and arteries still get clogged up and lungs get cancer. My values are not the problem; it is your logic (or attempt at it) that is flawed. With regards to smoking I have some very intelligent friends who smoke. I've spoken to them about it.They know the potential consequences. They enjoy it. They value this enjoyment to the point that they take the risk. For you categorize them as 'dumb' because they smoke an you don't is elitist. So your friends are intelligent... even PhD’s that does not exclude them from the possibility of making dumb decisions... the fact they get "pleasure" from smoking and are willing to take all the ill effects that come from it, as proven by research, tells me they make a choice dumber than dumb... because in spite of having the intelligence to do better... they don't. I know, it is their choice... a dumb choice. --I do not "classify them" as dumb. They make a dumb choice. (quite a difference) It has NOTHING whatsoever to do with "elitist" Using your premise above that they rather live a shorter life but less boring is the standard of measure... I fail to see how smoking.... and stinking like an ashtray would make their life "... "Less boring"... in fact, I was under the impression that people smoke because they are bored -GGGG Give me a break.... Oh yes, and tell your friends... "Get a life" -GGGI might add that a healthy diet may not be so healthy after all...Considerable debate as to what is a"healthy" diet rages all the time. Science changes it's mind on this subject every generation or so. "Considerable debate”? Bullshit... what debate...? You either lead a healthy life or not, i.e. eat well balanced diet and do a little exercise or not.... you either chose to do it or not... what debate? All you need is reasonable judgment to: 1. eat a balanced diet and avoid excessively fatty and fried foods... (at least not do it too often). 2. do a little exercise... 3. don't poison your lungs These simple guidelines will keep you away from junk food and tobacco, not much to "debate" there [unless of course, you want to go around in circles --in which case I pass.] For your benefit.... __________________________ Main Entry: elit·ism Pronunciation: A-'lE-"ti-z&m, i-, E- Function: noun Date: 1947 1 : leadership or rule by an elite 2 : the selectivity of the elite; especially : SNOBBERY 1 <elitism in choosing new members> 3 : consciousness of being or belonging to an elite - elit·ist /-'lE-tist/ noun or adjective ______________________________ From there.... in reference to this discussion, if you want to invent all kinds of excuses or pretend that it will not harm you... well be my guest... you are free to do that... but please do not confuse magnesia with amnesia.... I am not "selecting" anybody... nor am I "excluding" anyone... you are who you are... and all that is fine by me. All I said was... based on existing knowledge readily available to anyone who wants to learn... It is a well-known fact that eating junk food regularly will, in most probability, make you fat and it is unhealthy... And. Smoking/chewing tobacco carries a great risk of getting cancer... Based on that, with such knowledge in hand... making the FREE CHOICE decision of eating such food and using tobacco, it is a DUMB decision....
