On the other hand, if we are to have a more pleasurable experience in Araby than the Israelis because we will treat the Arabs more fairly than the Israelis have, then why are we keeping the Israelis around as allies?

The US stays the course as an Israel ally because Israel is a democracy in the Middle East.

Now the Cold War is over, I don't think the US will ever forsake a democracy unless circumstances are horribly overwhelming.

And why is our foreign policy so in line with theirs when their foreign policy has been proved ineffective (at stopping terrorism) by 50 years of violence?

What aspects of the foreign policy are you thinking of? The Palestinian problem has parallels with India's Pakistan relation. The proxy war that Pakistan runs against India has dragged on for decades. The proxy war the Arab nations have run against Israel through the Palestinians has caused that conflict to drag on. Had the Pals been left alone, they could have had the Israelis on the ropes pretty quickly by going on a variation of the Gandhi route.

The proxy wars the Soviets ran against the West dragged on until the Soviet empire collapsed.

Proxy war is undertaken in an effort both to avoid normal foreign relations and to avoid the large costs of direct warfare.

Did you have some other aspect of Israel/US foreign policy in mind?
