Lizzie: IMO, Bush's only chance to be re-elected is to find an exit strategy on the IRAQ buildup ASAP...He can spin things and say that our plan for military action was essential to get the inspectors back into IRAQ and insure that the 'disarmament process' was taken seriously...we then slowly bring many of the troops home and allow the United Nations forces to back up Hans Blix & Co....This will reassure consumers and businesses in the United States and Europe that war may be unnecessary --> then, and only then will confidence start to rise and we may see the capital spending kick in...IMO, the market would respond and have a true 'relief rally'...Our economy is NOT healthy at all and Bush needs time for it to heal before the next election cycle...IMO, if he drags us into an expensive 'elective war' that could trigger a double dip recession (Merrill Lynch's Chief Strategist mentioned this possibility yesterday on CNBC).

The true danger to his strategy is that he may set off a series of chain reactions which have nothing to do with his plan, and that some of those reactions could have nuclear consequences.

If this happens all of those Cold War decades would have been wasted, perhaps that money better spent in making sure the growth of terrorism had no possibilities at all to mature.

I just got back on the computer and found your note...i.e. about losing face and all the incipient problems IF HE DOESN"T GO TO WAR. I agree with you totally and will even go on to say this will be a disaster like Vietnam because of the hornets nest around the world it will stir up. In the future any nation can go to war against any other for no provocation other than they THINK THEY HAVE CAUSE.

Or, they want another leader in place. This is setting a terrible precedent... So sad.
