I don't think the situation will become a matter of "I told you so." More to the point, I think the emphasis will change from "don't start the war" to "stop the war." I know that should this war begin that will be my action with respect to this thread.

That the war begins does not make it a just war. The sooner our forces are out of harm's way the better. It's sad indeed when governments makes people into killers when they are not.

Were this a war of self-defense, had all remedies for solutions been exhausted and were waging the war likely to produce a greater and more humane result than not waging the war, then this war would be supported by just about everyone and that support for it would not only be strong in this country but throughout the world. What's happening right now is contrary to this.

Bush should declare victory that the inspections have resumed and that Iraq has been contained and that this wouldn't have happened had the US not acted the way it did. UN peacekeers, although not in as great numbers, should replace the military forces now in the region. The UN sanctions should gradually be lifted and measured against the performance of the inspections.

Where should he go, what should he do afterwards?

a) Call for a pan-Arabia conference to deal with how they deal with Israel; put the most intense pressure possible, the most intense pressure ever, on Israel; assure both Iran and Syria that they will not be targets of US aggression.

b) Begin, in concert with China, constructively dealing with North Korea. Use the election of the new South Korean leader as a means of unifying the two countries.
c) Lead a worldwide conference on what gives rise and breeds terrorism in the world.
d) Deal with the US economy and repair the ill will with our European allies.

What I hope for from the war objectors is that once we go to war ( as I think its almost certain )

I thought that, but now I'm not so sure. We've lost turkey, and now we have only spain, australia and the UK in our corner. I know Bush says he's going it alone but the huge backlash from the world on this war was not expected, I am sure. Even Spain has 70% of its citizens against the war so any ally that stands with the US is in jeopardy of being brought down in his own nation. The Bush people have to be thinking about this.

Some will stand with America. Most war objectors will stand against America, as they do now.

It will be hard for me to accept the "I told you so" people when even saying that will probably mean we have been badly hurt and lost many lives.

It is important to remember that lessons cannot be learned if mistakes are not identified. If this war is the key to peace and prosperity, especially if coupled with democracy and a better life for those in the middle east, then you will probably never hear from a naysayer again because everyone will be out enjoying their prosperity.

It is not justification for a war just becuase some remote possibility is advantageous for all, each and every person must base their support on the major probabilities. Right now the probability is that Junior "Jingo" George is going to piss off so many Arabs and Muslims that we will become less secure, more in debt from military expenditures, and generally unhappy from the outcome of this war. Nobody wants to stand in international ruin just so they can say "I told you so".
