To: Karen Lawrence who wrote (14506 ) 3/1/2003 10:47:32 PM From: KLP Respond to of 25898 The point was that at no time in history has ANY other country taken in so many races, creeds, nationalities of people and had so many get along. Yes, it took many years, but by in large, it is done. Look at Iraq....they just murder thousands, if not hundreds of thousands. Ditto Germany. Ditto nearly any place in Africa. ETC. And yes, I know about the colonials and the lands given by the king....While some of my ancestors weren't original deed holders, some were here shortly after, and held large amounts of land. Other ancestors came here with nothing much in their pocket, except a dream. And the ability to work. And work hard they did. One of them was even a gandy dancer and wasn't Chinese. He was near the bottom of a large family of European descent, that believed in giving the oldest son double the land, money, etc. So he went to "earn his way" for himself and his young family.....and bless his heart, he did! No one helped him, except his neighbors. No social security, no free housing, free food, free clothing, nor free medical treatments, etc. >>>>>>> And America was glad to have them Not so, not by a long shot. The Irish met with terrible discrimination, (go see Gangs of New York) as did the Germans, the Scandinavians, Mexicans. The French are still getting grief. And God help Iraqis in this country. People were spit upon, beaten, robbed, killed until assimilated and a new group to hate came along. The Chinese who built the railroads weren't treated as well as slaves. And it's not true that everyone who came here was poor. Many were given lands by the king so they would come here and colonize this country. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
