The Long Bomb
By THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN

This man continues to write some of the best thinking on the subject of this war. This column expresses the sentiments of many -- there is an element of righteousness in the war that makes it appealing, but you're just not sure whether we're biting off more than we can chew.

I can much more readily identify with this sentiment than I can with the one that the war is a bad idea, outright.

So here's how I feel: I feel as if the president is presenting us with a beautiful carved mahogany table — a big, bold, gutsy vision. But if you look underneath, you discover that this table has only one leg. His bold vision on Iraq is not supported by boldness in other areas. And so I am terribly worried that Mr. Bush has told us the right thing to do, but won't be able to do it right.

Well done article.......it seems to me the writer has a good sense of what's going on. However, I'm not sure the proposed war ever came from a bold, gutsy vision. And I guess he confirms that view when he makes this key statement......."his bold vision on Iraq is not supported by boldness in other areas".

In other words, boldness isn't a one issue deal. What appears to look bold with the war on Iraq in reality is simply "a table with only one leg". And we all know what happens when people set things on a table with one leg!

nytimes.com;

Good story. I liked it. And he was correct. But, before Europes objected, to help us with post war Iraq, I don't think there would have been that many worries. It is the EU objections, and the whys that are the concerns. The US helped Europe become the economic powers they are today, and now they are too selfish to help the middle east do likewise, because they fear the US might become too powerful. Amazing. It is only right that the middle east have the same opportunities they had; no matter how much it helps the US. It will be worth it, because the lives of a billion arabs are more important than a few dollars. Yes, it will take time and money, but the end result will pay in spades.

On a side note, on 60 Minutes, they had a program on the graduates of IIT, India Institute of Technology, and how good they are, and that most graduates go to the US. Imagine that, that democratic powerhouse, established by Britian is now supplying our best brainpower. No offense to Tench, and all of the Asians who have made us great. . Who is to say, the Arabs won't be our most important contributors in the future.
