Easy to say that with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight. It's like playing last year's stock market: Don't you wish you could?

There were reasons that seemed good at the time for what was done. Afghanistan? They're next to Pakistan, which next to India. Want a Communist regime in the world's 2nd-most-populous country in addition to the first? How much real estate do you give up?

Remember, the Cold War was a high stakes game.

Iraq? Iraq was the foe of Iran. Iran was a deadly enemy who had kidnapped US diplomats and was trying to spread revolution throughout the ME. At the time, it made since to help their enemy. Although the Iran-Iraq War was a case where it was impossible to pick someone to cheer for; it seemed best if it just continued forever.

Too bad it didn't.
