In most cases, 256MEG is sufficient...

There is another scenario that I encounter fairly frequently - working on documents with multiple browsers and applications open.

Thanks Ally and every one who responded.. The thing is I tend to have any where up to 6-10 internet sessions open and that is one reason I had posted the question.. Most people seem to have a max of 512mb.. For now I guess I will pass unless price drop some more.. amazing collapse in RAM prices and seem there will be more pressure..
