Larry, The Russians have a short simpler launch checklist. Their rockets is less complex and can achieve a varieyt of orbits. The meet a huttle orbit is doable, a bit extra fule, but well within the capability.
Other shuttles could have been readied in a few weeks.
Would the oxxygen last 2-3 weeks on minimum electric power useage? Beats me, but quite possibly.
Sad, that nothing was done.

Bill

COLUMBIA FLIGHT-DECK-VIDEO CAN BE VIEWED ON C-SPAN......
Go to: c-span.org then select Columbia Flight Deck Video.

I watched a portion of the recovered tape today on C-SPAN that was recorded
on the Columbia during re-entry Feb. 1. The "plasma" could be seen thru the windows,
just small bursts of orange-yellow at first, then increased to a brighter and more constant glow.
The crew was just doing routine stuff getting ready for re-entry,
putting on gloves, etc.
The tape ended before any of the trouble began.
