re: So if our president, due to his own theology, is apt to mix 'his' version of God with 'their' version of God, well, then it becomes an issue

Yeah, it's a real god-eat-god world we live in, huh?

Hmmm. Apparently I'm lost then.

I'm an atheist. I don't seem to fit your stereotype at all well.

What's worse for it, I know a good number of other atheists on SI how also support Bush.

Could your preconceptions be blinding you to reality?

When Bush early on used the term "crusade" against terrorism, this was widely misunderstood by Muslims worldwide.
Tough s**t. If they claim the right to dictate our language to us, then they had best be prepared to bring their armies over here to enforce it. Personally, I intend to shoot back.

"Crusade" is a common English word.

Main Entry: 1cru·sade
Pronunciation: krü-'sAd
Function: noun
Etymology: blend of Middle French croisade & Spanish cruzada; both ultimately from Latin cruc-, crux cross
Date: circa 1708
1 capitalized : any of the military expeditions undertaken by Christian powers in the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries to win the Holy Land from the Muslims
2 : a remedial enterprise undertaken with zeal and enthusiasm

Its commonest usage is #2 and you know it. And that is the sense in which Bush meant it and you know that too.

Remember "Crusade in Europe"? Title of a well known book by Dwight D. Eisenhower? Do you think he was using the wrong maps and thought he was in the Holy Land as his armies marched through France and Germany?

Cut the crap.

Whoa. Thats a leap my friend. I am no bible thumper and I support the action. Early on in this situation I have found myself wondering if the Muslims weren't viewing this as a religious war. I have said to a great many friends that in order to be fair we need to stomp out some of our own religious fanatics. It seems to me that people in many places on the globe are using religion as a weapon instead of the book of love it was meant to be
