Sounds good to me. Given the problems we had with NATO, I'd say withdraw and they can take care of themselves.

This sort of thing won't happen though. Nor withdrawal from the UN. These are (or maybe were) means for the US to project its power around the globe and there are strong interests back of that that will prevent either from happening.

At least they would be forced to come to terms with the outlandish amount of money thats being spent for defense.

Some of it is good, of course. Obviously I'm not an expert on the subject so maybe I have a false set of assumptions here- but I would say the worst roi on military spending is probably the actual deployment of the troops, and "nation building" (occupying) etc.

The best ROI for military spending, would be the R&D for the patriot missle or other high tech weaponry- there you are basically doing scientific research, and at the end what you have is a peacekeeper missle (great name) that might just keep the peace. You also can sell these weapons to friendly countries if agreed upon. Of course there is a limit to this, we don't want to be funding and building a missile to destroy the earth. It seems to me the smart weapons that were unveiled in the last gulf war were truly awe-inspiring to many nations that underestimated our military.
