Voltaire's point of view, if "god did not exist, we'd better invent him fast".

Voltaire's words were "If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him in order to keep the peace and order in our society."

A side effect, the resulting "social order"...

Voltaire was an atheist. He said the above, because he thought this is what was done - God was invented to keep order in society. In his view, the "social order" was not the "side effect", but rather the reason for which religion was invented.
