Saddam sees himself as the heir to Stalin; in that role he has singlehandidly saved through his deep pockets the socialist movement. The apologists of saddam are really trying to preserve their failed movement and he is the single world stage player with the bucks to do it. Preservation of world socialism is saddams promise to the anti war crowd, their defense of him is the same as it's been everywhere else they've had power. So what if a few million citizens die, to them, its the movement that must be saved.
