willcousa: If people think they lost a lot of money on stocks think what could be lost on bonds if interest rates went up 2 or 3 points!

Don't ignore a major difference. A person who buys a bond is assured of getting par back if he holds to maturity, barring the issuer's bankruptcy.

A person who buys a stock has no assurance of getting that money back no matter what the health of the issuer.
